# Chapter 3: OpenStack and the IaaS technical baseline

This chapter turns an approved IaaS requirement into a reviewable set of cloud resources. We use OpenStack as the concrete implementation, but the method transfers to comparable IaaS platforms: establish the administrative boundary, discover valid inputs, request compute, network and storage resources, then verify their combined state. Product names, APIs and defaults vary between platforms.

Our reference request is deliberately small. We create a virtual machine (VM) named `web-01`, permit Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) traffic from one documented client range, attach a separate data volume and associate a floating IP. The result is an IaaS foundation, not a running web service. Workload installation, certificates, Domain Name System (DNS) and the end-to-end HTTPS test belong to the workload layer.

The learning package offers three routes through the same material:

* This chapter explains the resource model, the decisions and the evidence required to accept the result.
* The [public lab](https://git.vanillacore.net/giga/content/src/branch/main/chapter-3/lab/README.md) contains seven complete walkthroughs for Horizon, the OpenStack command-line client and OpenTofu.
* The [video scopes](https://git.vanillacore.net/giga/content/src/branch/main/chapter-3/VIDEO_SCOPES.md) define two concept introductions and one 5 to 7 minute demonstration for each practical lab step. Videos are optional and do not replace the executable text.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://experience-digital-transform.gitbook.io/experience-digital-transformation/cloud-for-dpi/chapter-3.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
